Accidents happen, and unfortunately dental emergencies can occur when you least expect them. If you need an urgent appointment to address an oral health woe, you may be wondering what to expect on your visit. But don’t despair. Here’s a breakdown of what might happen at your exam.

Assessing the Damage

When you arrive at your appointment, your dentist will likely take some images of your tooth or teeth. This will help give them a better understanding of the damage so they can make the appropriate repairs.

Next, your dentist will examine area of concern with a dental mirror and determine whether your treatment can be conducted immediately or if you will need to return at another time.

Quick Fixes

In some cases, you may require a procedure such as a root canal, or you may need a more extensive filling such as a crown. These procedures may not be able to be completed on the same day, so you may need to come back. If you do need a crown, your dentist will fashion a temporary crown for you to wear until your permanent crown is back from the lab. At that time, you will be scheduled to return to have it permanently attached.

Sedation

While some procedures may require anesthesia, you should also be prepared for the possibility of needing sedation. In this case, you should be sure to have someone available to provide transportation home from your appointment. For procedures that only require nitrous oxide, you can drive yourself home after a brief waiting period, but for any other form of sedative you must have a ride. Many states do not allow patients under anesthesia to use taxis or ride share services, so be sure to choose someone you know and trust for this responsibility.

While You Wait

In the event of a dental emergency, be sure to call your dentist as soon as possible to get on their schedule. Explain the problem to the dental team in as much detail as possible so they can give you advice about how to care for your injury prior to being seen. Follow the dentist’s instructions as closely as possible, as this could make a difference in protecting your teeth.

Remember, dental accidents happen, but thankfully there’s no need to panic. If you find yourself in a dental emergency, take a deep breath, call your dentist, and follow their steps to prevent further injury. Soon you’ll be feeling better and have plenty of reasons to smile!
