Whether you’re going on a road trip or you’re getting on a flight, if you’re going home for the holidays, you might be feeling a bit stressed. Amid the hustle and bustle of making sure you’ve packed everything, coordinating travel plans, and handling everything else that it takes to plan a family get-together, something will inevitably fall through the cracks, and you don’t want it to be your oral health! With this in mind, keep reading for four tips for taking care of your teeth while traveling.

Tip #1: Pack Travel-Sized Dental Hygiene Tools

Instead of bringing your current oral hygiene tools, consider packing travel-sized ones instead! There are a few advantages of this approach, including eliminating the potential of losing your expensive electric toothbrush. It’s also a good idea because you can easily bring your dental care essentials to any restaurant or home you’re going to, making the task of brushing your teeth after each meal a breeze.

Tip #2: Keep Sugar-Free Gum in Your Carry-On

Of course, even if there is a bathroom available, you might not feel comfortable brushing and flossing your teeth (like while you’re at the airport). That’s where the sugar-free gum comes in. Although it’s not a replacement for a toothbrush and toothpaste, it can help remove food particles from your teeth, reducing your chances of developing tooth decay in the process.

Tip #3: Stick to Water

Pumpkin spiced lattes, mulled wine, and fizzy mocktails are a few staples of the holiday season. Unfortunately, they are often loaded with added sugar as well. Since you’ll likely already be indulging in your fair share of cranberry sauce, pecan pie, and the like between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, consider making water your drink of choice instead.

Tip #4: Fill Your Plate with Smile-Friendly Foods

Although many holiday spreads are packed with sugary and starchy foods, there are often some smile-friendly options in the mix as well. Mashed sweet potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, and juicy turkey are just a few examples. So, try filling your plate with these items first! That way, when it comes time for dessert, you’re less likely to over-indulge.
