What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are commonly referred to as “porcelain veneers” since that’s the material that’s used most often. Essentially, these thin shells are about the width of a fingernail and, when adhered to the front-facing surface of your teeth, they can conceal noticeable chips, significant stains, considerable gaps, and other common imperfections. Since the size, shape, and shade of each one are completely customized to your face shape and aesthetic preferences, the final result will be a smile that looks absolutely flawless.

The Process of Getting Veneers

First, you’ll meet with one of our talented, experienced, meticulous, and passionate dentists. At this meeting, they will learn all about your dental history, what you want to change about your smile, and what you want the final result to be. With all of this information, they can determine if you’re a candidate for veneers. If the answer is “yes,” then they will “prep” your teeth, take impressions for the lab, and provide you with a temporary set.

Once we receive your final veneers from the lab, we will inspect them closely to make sure they are perfect. Then, we will schedule your final appointment, which is when we will remove your temporary veneers and bond your final ones in place. After we make any small, necessary adjustments and polish them up, the smile transformation process will be complete!

The Benefits of Veneers

Here are a few of the many reasons veneers are so popular:

  • The entire treatment process can often be completed in just two or three visits
  • The size, shape, and shade of each veneer is completely customizable
  • They can correct multiple imperfections simultaneously
  • The materials used, like porcelain, are stain-resistant
  • The results can last for 10+ years with proper care

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

Before we can give you an accurate estimate of the cost, we need to conduct a comprehensive oral exam and learn all about your smile goals. That way, we can determine important information, like if any preliminary treatments are necessary and how many veneers are needed. In addition to providing you with the price of your smile makeover at your consultation, we will also review the financial solutions available, including flexible financing with CareCredit.

Veneer FAQs

Are Veneers Permanent?

No, veneers are not considered permanent, because they will eventually need to be replaced. However, because your dentist will need to remove a small amount of enamel from each treated tooth, they are considered irreversible. Enamel does not grow back, and thus any tooth which has been prepared in this way will always need either veneers or a crown covering it.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

The length of time your veneers last depends on a variety of factors, but a 2007 study of 304 veneers by Layton found that:

  • 96% of veneers lasted 5 years
  • 93% lasted 10 to 11 years
  • 91% lasted 12 to 13 years
  • 73% lasted 15 to 16 years
  • In 2012, another study of 318 veneers by Beier found that 83% lasted 20 years

Most veneer failure is due to fractures, chips, and cracks that can occur if you don’t properly protect your teeth. The average lifespan is about 15 years, but they are capable of lasting 30 or more with excellent care.

You can easily avoid damaging them by sticking to a strict oral hygiene routine, and by avoiding using treated teeth to crunch on any hard foods or objects.

What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?

While the veneers themselves will not harm your teeth, you still do need to brush and floss regularly to prevent decay from forming underneath them.

Thankfully, only a minimal amount of enamel needs to be removed from each treated tooth, and the remaining enamel is protected by the veneer, so they will not increase your risk of cavities. You can provide additional protection by limiting your sugar consumption and visiting Radiant Dental regularly for your biannual exam and cleaning appointments.

Can You Whiten Veneers?

While you can still whiten your untreated teeth, whitening products have no effect on your veneers. If they have become discolored or stained, you’ll need to replace them or have them shaded.

Be aware that if you do choose to whiten your untreated teeth, you could experience noticeable shade variations between them and your veneers, so be sure to have them whitened before getting veneers so they can be color-matched to your smile.
